6 Macam 6 Ragam

Assalamualaikum

6 Macam 6 Ragam

salah satu amanah-Nya
kepada kita
yang bergelar hamba …
salah satu anugerah Tuhan
kepada kita
yang bergelar insan …
Keturunan!

syukur alhamdulillah
Kau kurniakan kami zuriat …
yang harus dijaga sepanjang hayat
agar tidak sesat
agar tiada cela dan cacat
agar semuanya selamat …

6 macam 6 ragam
inilah permata hati kami
tiga perwira tiga srikandi
lengkap susunan berpasang-pasang
lelaki perempuan berselang-selang
‘selang bunga’ kata orang …
antara setiap pasang
setahun jeda usia
antara setiap pasangan pula
dua tahun jaraknya …
bagaimana terjadi
tak usah persoalkan
kuasa-Nya yang menentukan!

anak pertama seorang putera
1977 tahun lahirnya
Sebagai abang panggilannya Along
kalau tak berperangai baik
tak dapek lah nak nolong!
dulu kecilnya kerap saja semput
jalan berlaga kepala lutut!
wah! mentang-mentang
ang sakarang lah gadang
hebat sekali memerintah orang
dengan siblings selalu naik berang
bertelagah setiap kali berbincang …
kesusilaan Melayu biarlah banyak
walaupun raut wajah persis si mamak!

anak kedua seorang puteri
Kak Ngah pangkatnya
keluarga yang beri
sayang sakan kepada haiwan
terhadap insan tak ketahuan
tak pernah pula dicurahkan perasaan!
comot selamba semasa kecil
tak sangka kini beransur comel …
1978 tahun lahirnya
berwajah anugerah ala Cindia …
suka berkemas juga menghias
kerja dapur sedikit culas!
time management kurang selesa …
kerja last minute berleluasa!

1980 tahun lahirnya
Bang Lang (Bangla?) anak ketiga
jejaka nerd dalam keluarga
tak habis-habis tugas kira-mengira
kadang-kadang serius tak kena gaya …
sejak kecil mamat ini smart
suka tiru gaya tokoh korporat
lagu puisi dia minati
pecahkan kerusi ala JR Dynasty!
bila bercakap suara biar langsung
jangan tersekat di kerongkong!
telinga tu mujur tak pekak
masa kecik masuk kerengga, ingat tak
‘bunyi macam kereta rosak!’

setahun kemudian lahir Kak Uda
tahun 1981 punya cerita
doktor kata better do without her
konon for the sake of the mother …
what nonsense yours sincerely kata
jangan doktor nak mengada-ngada!
akhirnya syukur alhamdulillah
anak membesar tak banyak masalah
rupanya kuat memanjat anak keempat ini
mengalahkan kecekapan si budak lelaki!
badan yang kurus dah heboh gemuk
berwajah ‘kaur’ habis tak payah sorok
kerja di rumah bolehlah tahan
aktiviti kajibumi masya-Allah dia lagi number one!

tahun 1983 agak istimewa
tahun lahirnya anak kelima
seorang lelaki … and history was created …
being the one and only not wanting to be delivered
di mana-mana hospital
mungkin baginya di rumah dah cukup afdal!
kebetulan Tok Anjang jadi tukang bang
langsung lekat gelaran ‘Wak’ sampai sekarang …
tak apalah semua famili sayang!
waktu kecil agak benyek
sikit-sikit melalak sikit-sikit merengek
dah besar ni kuat pula menyakat
mengacau kaum kerabat tak dapat disekat
ditegur saja serta-merta berwajah kelat!

jadi plumber dia boleh, electrician pun boleh juga
banking dia biasa uruskan, spending pun boleh tahan!
tahun 1984 tahun kelahirannya
anak bongsu dalam keluarga
tentulah dia diberi manja!
masa kecilnya berperangai pelik
tiap kali nak masuk rumah orang, mesti nak balik
bila dah besar boleh tahan celupar
mulut laser ramai yang tak sanggup dengar!
ciri baik yang dia miliki
walaupun perempuan dia boleh buat kerja lelaki
boleh control apa saja di bawah jagaannya
tak kira haiwan ataupun manusia
dengan jelingan yang tajam menusuk jiwa!

6 macam 6 ragam
Menghidupkan warna suasana
Di teratak jiwa …
6 macam 6 ragam
menceriakan erti kehidupan
di laman perasaan …
akhirnya anggaplah coretan kata ini
sebagai teguran berunsur komedi …
dan sesungguhnya
Allah saja yang maha mengetahui

Assalamualaikum

PFB's First Malay Reader

When I first joined Oxford University Press/Penerbit Fajar Bakti in 1980 I was immediately given "the bible". The Editorial Manual containing hard and fast rules and regulations for all OUP/PFB editors! I was also given the Press Publication List. I was indeed overwhelmed if not overawed by the huge number of titles flowing down the list. I thought it could go on and on and on . . .

But what actually caught my eye was one title "Buaya Mati Dua Kali" (BMDK) shown in the Publication List. I wondered what it was that this crocodile did until it died twice. He must have been a "sinner" I thought. Well, after a short while of pondering . . . the matter was just left at that.

Every thought about the "buaya" was neglected and the situation went into oblivion. One can simply say I still did not understand at that time what "Buaya Mati Dua Kali" (BMDK) was all about.

Many months lapsed. Then there was this thing about OUP celebrating its 25th Anniversary in Malaysia in a few months time . . . There was this talk about OUP/PFB Malaysia going into the celebration in a more than moderate manner.

On 23 October 1982 OUP/PFB Malaysia indeed went into the act of celebrating OUP's 25th Anniversary in Malaysia in a big way. There was this big celebration held at the International Hotel, Kuala Lumpur in grand Malay Traditional style with the Bunga Manggar, Kompang, Busana, band and all.

After 25 Years in Malaysia

Though a new hand at OUP/PFB, I was given the task of taking care of food and venue for the big night. That was a challenge by itself! Every Department was asked to present an entertainment item for the occasion. Marks were given in some sort of a competition amongst the departments. There were about 8 departments in all. I cannot remember that clearly who actually won what . . . but looking back today I guess everyone was a winner that time then!

There was also this Talentime Competition and Award Presentation Ceremony. I featured in all the excitement. Every other staff enjoyed to the fullest the running of the occasion "Malam Buaya Mati Dua Kali" in conjunction with OUP's 25th Anniversary in Malaysia on 23 October 1982.

The Committee Members for MBMDK

That 1980 special do answered my curiosity . . . the title "Buaya Mati Dua Kali" was so relevant that it was chosen to highlight the big night "Malam Buaya Mati Dua Kali" marking a significant happening. And only then I came to know that BMDK was the first Malay Reader for PFB. It was actually, a translated version of Shamus Frazer English reader, "The Crocodile Dies Twice". The English version was published in 1954. The Malay translation by Asraf was first published in 1958. Abdullah Ibrahim was the illustrator for the translated reader.

After that came the avalanche of Malay readers . . . leading to numerous quality titles taking up the columns in OUP/PFB reading list (and the space of shelves in leading bookstores) which became very popular and dominant in the local book market!
