The Politic of Politics

Assalamualaikum dan Selamat Sejahtera

(A Rat Calling Itself Politikus)

I was enjoying a roti canai and nasi lemak breakfast with several friends at a local eatery . . . a Mamak shop to be precise.

We were discussing everyday happenings vis-à-vis safety and security matters . . . of people and places around us. 

That kind of an informal discussion will of course include some small talk about the enforcement of laws and regulations by the local authorities, the state authorities/governments, the federal authorities/government and the like.

While the six of us were busy eating and also chatting about those good old days when we were just happy and satisfied to be governed by the ruling party . . . one other friend of mine walked up to our table and, in a very matter-of-fact manner . . . made this comment :

“I’m a keen follower of your blog. I noticed you wrote quite a lot about members of your family and friends and the norms and behaviour of our society at large. I love reading them . . . especially when you touched many subjects of interest to individuals and society quite humorously.”

I was still listening to his words when he shot me this question:

“How come you never even once wrote or comment anything about the political scenario of our country. Takutkah?”

Before I could open my mouth to manage a response . . . he (with some sort of a triumphant gesture of the hands) added:

“I know . . . you’re ‘orang kerajaan . . . orang pemerintahlah katakan' . . .”

I just kept mum. I thought . . . what has that got to do with my not writing anything politically inclined. I thought what worth would it bring for me to entertain such assumption!

I thought I would rather be ‘positively’ than ‘negatively’ involved with my society. I'd be more willing to write about the better things in life! About matters that will make people happy and not be at feuding ends all the while with each other.

I knew politics has never been and will never be my cup of tea . . . though some friends may still remember those days when I was quite politically involved.

To that friend of mine . . . the ‘no answer’ stand was merely to uphold the ‘long time’ friendship I’ve had with him. I could easily have said:

"Hey look here kawan . . . you and your political outlook konon!

Are you really some kind of a political personality fit to be termed ‘full-fledged’ when you’re just ‘half-baked’ or even ‘totally raw’ . . . Just make yourself scarce man ( the equivalent of which in the present generation lingo is ‘Tak bole blah lah dia ni’)"

Yes that’s my stand on present day politics and towards those typical tunjuk pandai kedai mamak and warong kopi politicians (politikus in Malay!)

I remember one famous Malay saying . . . "Kalau kail panjang sejengkal, jangan lautan hendak diduga." 

Yes, I’m a MALAY . . . and still proud of being a MALAY (and a MALAYSIAN for that matter if you want it!) . . . but I don't want to be a 'rat' no more than a half-baked politikus!

Apakah Sumbangan Anda?

Assalamualaikum dan Selamat Sejahtera

Hari ini merupakan hari ke-10 terakhir kita berada dalam bulan Ramadan yang mulia buat tahun 1436H (2015). 

Alhamdulillah kita masih diizinkan Allah swt mengisi ruang dan mengambil peluang untuk meneruskan hidup di dunia yang fana ini. 

Menoleh ke detik-detik kehidupan sebagai rakyat atau warga negara Malaysia yang tercinta . . . pernahkah kita terfikir apa sumbangan yang telah kita berikan terhadap keamanan dan kemakmuran negara ini selain daripada sumbangan yang 'wajib' untuk keluarga sendiri dan seterusnya komuniti kita. 

Pernahkah kita benar-benar meluangkan masa memberi perhatian kepada bentuk dan jenis peranan berfaedah yang harus kita laksanakan demi kebaikan negara kita Malaysia. 

Rungutan atau sungutan sering kedengaran daripada kelompok tertentu warga atau rakyat di negara kita. 

Mereka itu gemar mempersoalkan apa yang negara boleh atau telah berikan kepada mereka! 

Tindak tanduk mereka itu jelas menampakkan sikap tidak mahu bersyukur dan tidak tahu menghargai rezeki dan nikmat hidup yang telah Allah swt limpahkan kepada mereka.

Ramai yang masih tidak insaf bahawa mereka terlalu banyak meminta berbanding memberi. Sikap negatif itu yang harus diperbetulkan terlebih dahulu . . .  bukan kegemaran asyik menimbulkan persoalan tadi. Itulah hakikatnya!

Ramai yang tidak menghargai dari mana dan bagaimana mereka dapat menikmati keselesaan hidup seperti sekarang. 

Mungkin sahaja kerana sudah agak lama berada dalam 'zon keselesaan' ramai yang mudah alpa akan peranan masing-masing sebagai warga negara Malaysia yang setia lagi bertanggung jawab . . . dan sebagai bangsa yang sudah berpuluh-puluh tahun Merdeka. 


Janganlah kerana terlalu leka bersengketa sesama sendiri dan angkuh melanjutkan perseteruan sendiri-sendiri . . . bangsaku akhirnya rugi. 

Janganlah menang sorak, kampung tergadai!

[Pada ketika begini aku terkenangkan kisah seorang sahabatku. Dia seorang yang berpendirian amat 'simple' dalam pendekatannya terhadap gaya kehidupan di negara Malaysia ini. 'Simple' tetapi cukup mengesankan!

Aku siarkan semula kisah berkenaan yang telah aku tuliskan (maaf ya dalam bahasa Inggeris) kira-kira enam tahun yang lalu.]

What's Your Contribution?

Assalamualaikum 

and greetings to one and all 

"What have you contributed to your family, (and/or) your kin, your neighbours, your community, your friends (and/or) the society at large today? What have you contributed to your country?

Nothing much? Nothing of great importance? Nothing worthy of mention? Nothing at all?

Don't panic ... you're doing OK. You're a normal citizen in a normal society of a normal country!"

I was taken aback when an old friend of mine said those words to me quite recently. I thought he was trying to pull my leg. He always like to pull a fast one on people especially those close to him. 

This instance I just could not restraint myself from asking him a question. 

I asked why was that so.

He smiled and said,"Yeah, in truth you have contributed something you might not be aware of".

"How come?" was my next question.

"By not giving headaches and problems to people around you. At least you're not troubling society. That's what you have contributed!"

I knew he was sincere when he said those words. He was that simple in thought and action!

Surely you too have such friends...
