One Patriotic Soul

Demise of Tan Sri Yuen Yuet Leng

"Harimau mati meninggalkan belang,

Manusia mati meninggalkan nama."

. . . one very famous Malay saying that will be such a fitting epitaph for the late Tan Sri Yuen Yet Leng . . . one patriotic soul who devoted his lifetime services to the well-being of the nation . . .

He was one special contributory factor in assisting the Malaysian government achieved victory over the Communist Terrorists insurrection of 1960 - 1990 . . . a long dark period in Malaysia's history.

I shall not forget his presence on Friday 9 May 2014 at the Dewan Perkasa, Wisma Perwira ATM (the Armed Forces officers mess at Jalan Padang Tembak, Kuala Lumpur) which sadly turned out to be my first and last encounter with him in person.

It was there where I came to know him and had the privilege to personally photographed him and be photographed with him.

The late Tan Sri was attending a book launch "Reminiscences of Insurrection - Malaysia's Battle Against Terrorism 1960-1990" written by Lt Kol Mohd Azzam bin Hanif Ghows (Rtd).

The launch was officiated by former Malaysian Premier The Right Honourable Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad.

I had some useful moments of conversation with him then. When I asked him for a private interview to be scheduled later on . . . he was non-hesitant at all.

The fact that he was a true gentleman and a very accommodating one was thoroughly obvious. He offered me an open invitation to visit him at his house. He also invited Lt Kol Basri Omar PGB (Rtd) to come.

That meeting with him however did not materialized for some reasons inexplicable. May God bless his soul.

"Manusia hanya boleh merancang,

Tuhan jua yang menentukan."
